Milestone: 40,000th Tourismo rolls off the production line.

Leinfelden-Echterdingen - Daimler Buses delivers a new record number: the 40,000th Mercedes-Benz Tourismo ceremoniously rolled off the production line at the beginning of 2026. This once again underlines the high-decker’s enormous popularity with customers and passengers. It is one of the most successful touring coaches on the European market. Mirko Sgodda, Head of Marketing, Sales and Customer Services Daimler Buses, is pleased with the high level of acceptance and sees the efforts of Daimler Buses rewarded in the highly competitive environment: "Daimler Buses has consistently further developed and refined the concept of the Mercedes-Benz Tourismo across all three generations of the high-decker. We have always had our customers, bus drivers and passengers in mind. This applies to profitability, comfort, design and, of course, exemplary active and passive safety. This was the only way to make the Tourismo the best-selling touring coach in Europe."

There are good reasons for the sales success:
  • Efficient drive technology and low fuel consumption make the Tourismo particularly economical.
  • Modern driver assistance and safety systems offer a plus in protection and safety on the road.
  • Comfortable seats, easy entrance and a standard lowering function make the Tourismo exceptionally comfortable.
  • With its striking body design and optimised aerodynamics, the Tourismo combines modern design with maximum efficiency.

Premiere of the first generation of the Tourismo.

The success story of the Mercedes-Benz Tourismo began in 1992 with the O 340, followed by the O 350 Tourismo, which was the first coach to bear a name with the three-pointed star. Mercedes-Benz is focusing on a clear positioning: the high-decker covers the business class, it is above all economical, yet comfortable and solidly crafted. The two-axle vehicle with a length of twelve metres quickly became a bestseller.

In autumn 2006, the second generation of the Tourismo followed at the IAA Commercial Vehicles in Hanover - with completely new highlights. The high-decker is now available in three lengths from 12 to 14 metres as well as as two and three-axle versions. In addition to the body, the equipment is more individual, allowing the Tourismo to adapt to individual applications and country-specific special features. An essential component of the safety equipment is the Electronic Stability Program (ESP). The new Tourismo is also rapidly becoming a bestseller: in 2015, sales reached a total of 10,000 units. At this time, Mercedes-Benz is already presenting the Tourismo with new assistance and safety systems: Lane Keeping Assist and the emergency braking assistant AEBS have been added.

3rd generation Tourismo: once again impressive in terms of technology, safety and comfort.

After more than 26,000 units, the third generation of the Mercedes-Benz Tourismo high-decker has been available since autumn 2017. More than ever, the touring coach impresses both enterprises, passengers and drivers. With a wide range of equipment variants and engines, the high-decker covers an unusually wide spectrum. Its field of application ranges from long-distance routes to long-distance trips and also includes shuttle and plant transport.

New assistance systems promise a high level of active safety. For example, Active Brake Assist 4. It is the only emergency braking assistant for coaches that automatically brakes for vehicles in front, stationary obstacles and pedestrians. Or Sideguard Assist. It warns the driver of pedestrians, cyclists and stationary obstacles when turning right.

The Tourismo underlines its profitability with every refuelling stop. The low fuel consumption is due to outstanding aerodynamics with an unsurpassed drag coefficient of Cd = 0.33 and the proverbially efficient drivetrain. With equipment such as the anticipatory cruise control system Predictive Powertrain Control (PPC) or Eco Driver Feedback (EDF) with individual tips for the current driving style, fuel consumption and emissions can be further reduced.

Safety Coach presents the latest safety technology in the Tourismo.

In 2023, the classic high-deck touring coach will be upgraded all round for a long journey, and will be presented for the first time in the new Tourismo Safety Coach. The range of modifications for the popular two- and three-axle vehicle with its four models from 12 to 14 metres in length ranges from LED headlamps and MirrorCam to new assistance and infotainment systems as well as a torque converter automatic transmission and redesigned tail lights. As an alternative to the standard halogen H7 headlamps, the Mercedes-Benz Tourismo is now optionally available with LED headlamps in the same housing. The new Mercedes-Benz Tourismo also makes progress in terms of exemplary profitability and environmental protection: the automatic body lowering by 20 millimetres now takes place at 79 km/h and not as with the predecessor from 95 km/h.

Typical for the new Tourismo are the innovative assistance systems that have been fully installed in the Safety Coach. The new Active Brake Assist 6 Plus emergency braking assistant is even more powerful. The system covers the entire speed range of the vehicle and is always active in the background. It can warn in good time and intervene if there is a risk of collision with vehicles in front or stationary vehicles. A reaction to pedestrians and cyclists is possible up to a speed of 60 km/h. The ABA 6 Plus safety system can react to crossing, oncoming or walking pedestrians and moving cyclists with automatic maximum full-stop braking. ABA 6 Plus can also offer a further improvement in safety for cyclists, whether in intercity or urban traffic.

The new Sideguard Assist 2 turn-off assistant reacts and warns even more precisely in the event of a risk of collision with pedestrians and cyclists. Previously available for the door side, it is now also used for the driver’s side. Frontguard Assist is completely new. The system warns of obstacles or people directly in front of the vehicle. The combination of Sideguard Assist 2 and Frontguard Assist creates a complete warning system that warns of obstacles and people at the sides and in front of the vehicle. Together with the standard reversing camera or especially the optional 360° camera system, the driver receives a comprehensive warning system around their coach.

Another new feature is Traffic Sign Assist. It warns when the permissible speed is exceeded. Finally, the adaptive cruise control ART, the Lane Assistant SPA, the tyre pressure monitoring system TPM (Tyre Pressure Monitoring), the attention assistance system Attention Assist (AtAs). Attention Assist uses a discreetly installed driver camera to detect signs of fatigue or distraction. If the system detects any irregularities in the way the driver’s eyes or eyelids are closed, it involves the driver via a warning tone and display - for maximum safety on long journeys.

Another striking novelty is the optional MirrorCam instead of the conventional outside mirrors. The images from the cameras are transmitted to 15-inch monitors mounted on the inside of the A-pillars. The MirrorCam combines numerous advantages. These include the extended field of vision for the driver, significantly better visibility in the dark, less soiling, less manoeuvring damage and a further reduction in fuel consumption thanks to a smaller frontal area.

The new multimedia system called Coach Infotainment Series offers the latest generation of media for professional use in touring coaches. This starts with the high-quality digital radio reception DAB+ and continues via Bluetooth audio streaming. An HDMI interface also allows a laptop to be connected - for example for travel information during a study trip or seminar content. Other end devices, for example the smartphone of a travel companion or a data stick, can be paired with the Coach Infotainment Series via USB ports. The central interface of the Coach Infotainment Series is a seven-inch monitor in the cockpit. It is located in the right-hand control panel of the driver cockpit and can therefore also be reached from the co-driver’s seat. A navigation system with 3D map for the driver is integrated into the Coach Infotainment Series. It receives up-to-date traffic reports online and can adjust its route accordingly or quickly inform its passengers of any changes or delays as required.

OMNIplus: digital is normal.

Another plus of the current Tourismo is the comprehensive service offered by the OMNIplus service brand. This applies to services ranging from oil changes for low-emission diesel engines to the supply of replacement parts - now increasingly on site from the 3D printer. Dealers can purchase parts 24/7 in the OMNIplus eShop. Genuine remanufactured parts optimise the cost balance and CO₂ footprint. Tailor-made service contracts convey security and cost transparency as well as the diverse and continuously expanded digital services of OMNIplus ON. For OMNIplus, digital has long been normal.
