Dances with the wind.

With its outstanding aerodynamics, the Mercedes-Benz Tourismo saves expensive fuel.

The Mercedes-Benz Tourismo, with its outstanding aerodynamics, makes for appreciable savings. And the coach is even able to shrink its cross-section at higher speeds.

The utmost efficiency is an essential characteristic of the Mercedes-Benz Tourismo high-decker coach. And its outstanding aerodynamics also play their part here. They lower the consumption of valuable resources and minimise CO2 emissions. An advantage that pays off particularly in times of high energy costs. The Tourismo is shaped to glide through the oncoming wind, saving money mile by mile. This is a standard feature and requires no driver input.

Perfectly shaped for efficiency: thanks to its aerodynamic design, the Tourismo reduces fuel consumption and minimises CO2 emissions.

(Air) resistance is futile: the product designers have achieved an outstanding coefficient of air resistance in the Tourismo.

The Tourismo has an impressively streamlined design. This starts already with the basic shape of its bodywork, which sets benchmarks in its class. With a cw value of 0.33, the high-decker achieves outstanding coefficients of air resistance.

The aerodynamically optimised bodywork, with the windscreen embedded almost without joints, the flush driver’s window and tightly fitting doors ensure the airstream passes close over the surface. At the same time, irritating wind noise is kept to a minimum. Vehicle cleaning is also easier as there are no recesses for dirt to get stuck in.

Gently stroked by the wind: the smooth, almost jointless bodywork nestles tightly in the airstream.

All’s well that ends well: with its recessed roofing edging ending in spoilers, the rear ensures air flows past in the best possible way and reduces the intensity of turbulence behind the coach.

The rear of the Tourismo has also been aerodynamically optimised. The roof edging and corner columns have been recessed to improve airflows and are integrated seamlessly in the bodywork design. All in all, this prevents unfavourable turbulence and at the same time reduces dirt at the back.

Above the unmistakeable “face” of the Tourismo, the large-scale, domed windscreen curves away. It includes clearance lights and transitions seamlessly, via airflow-optimised curves, into the roof, which is slightly lowered in front, and the flat side walls. In this way, it combines the perfect aerodynamic form with the best possible visibility for drivers and passengers.

Seamless transition: the large-scale, domed windscreen with its airflow-optimised curves fits flush into the flat side walls.

Particularly close fit: the bracketless Aquablade wipers fit close against the windscreen, barely allowing the wind to gain purchase – this minimises turbulence and reduces noise.

The bracketless Aquablade wipers fit close against the windscreen. This means the airstream can pass almost unhindered over the vehicle’s body. The wiper fluid is conducted within the wiper blade to the integrated nozzles, optimising windscreen cleaning – this saves wiper cycles and reduces fluid consumption.

The roof-mounted air-con also presents as little resistance to the airstream as possible. Like the arms of the wing mirrors, its design has been aerodynamically optimised. This not only makes travel cheaper, but also less noisy.

Invisible wind channels: by hiding the floor cladding under the front overhang, airflows are channelled even more efficiently away.

Aerodynamics often comes down to a lot of little details that are not visible at first glance. Even the curves of the bumper, for example, have been aerodynamically adjusted. Also typical for the Tourismo is the floor cladding, hidden beneath the front overhang. This helps to channel airstreams even more efficiently.

One other trick is also invisible: if the coach travels for at least 10 seconds with a speed over 79 km/h, the bodywork lowers automatically and imperceptibly by 20 millimetres. If the speed drops back below 70 km/h, it rises again of its own accord. This lowering reduces the air resistance, with a knock-on effect on fuel consumption and emissions.

Ducking and diving: lowering the bodywork at high speeds reduces the front cross-section, optimises airflows underneath the coach and reduces fuel consumption.
