Safety takes priority.

Safety and assistance systems ensure the highest level of protection.

Active Brake Assist 6, Sideguard Assist 2 or Frontguard Assist and Traffic Sign Assist – at the Driving Experience 2024 event in Madrid in mid-March, the new safety and assistance systems from Daimler Buses took centre stage. At the Circuito del Jarama motorsport racetrack near Madrid, participants had the opportunity to sit behind the wheel of the latest Mercedes-Benz buses to experience the assistance and camera systems for themselves.

They were also able to get an impression of the power of the new drive systems used in the Mercedes-Benz eCitaro, Intouro K hybrid and other buses. The day's programme of events, repeated over 5 days, was rounded off with live presentations and a demonstration of the real-time evaluation and analysis of vehicle data by the OMNIplus ON fleet management system.

Not only are the buses and coaches from Mercedes-Benz pioneers in terms of technology and economy, but the topic of safety has also always played a significant role in the company. For decades, Daimler Buses has been setting standards in terms of safety technology and has always provided the best available technology in its buses and coaches long before regulatory requirements were introduced. Most recently, a wealth of new assistance systems were presented at the Busworld Europe 2023 trade fair in Brussels, from Active Brake Assist 6 to Traffic Sign Assist, Sideguard Assist 2 and Frontguard Assist, all the way through to MirrorCam and 360° camera system.

A pioneer when it comes to safety: Intouro K hybrid, eCitaro and Tourismo on the Circuito del Jarama near Madrid.

“Our new safety systems set the new standard in all vehicle variants, providing the highest level of safety for the city, intercity and touring coaches from Mercedes-Benz.”

Also in Madrid: the eCitaro fuel cell, our electric bus with fuel cell as a range extender.

In order to further increase safety in road traffic, especially for vulnerable road users such as cyclists and pedestrians, the updated General Safety Regulation (GSR) of the EU will require a whole range of driver assistance systems for newly registered buses from July 2024. These include Blind Spot Assist on the co-driver’s side and in front of the vehicle for short-range detection, traffic sign recognition for speed control, Attention Assist, tyre pressure monitoring system, reversing monitoring, a light signal in the event of emergency braking as well as an interface for an optional alcohol tester (Alcohol Interlock).

These smart electronic assistants help to keep serious consequences arising from moments of inattentiveness to a minimum. This benefits drivers and passengers as well as all other road users, regardless of whether they are travelling by car, bicycle or on foot. With its assistance systems, Daimler Buses goes above and beyond the requirements set by the EU and in some cases even expands the safety functions significantly beyond the level required by the GSR from 2024.

MirrorCam and 360° camera system support the driver when turning and manoeuvring in tight spaces as well as when reversing.

A highlight in Madrid was the MirrorCam. Behind the wheel of the buses on the handling course and on defined routes – both on the Circuito del Jarama racetrack and on public roads – participants could literally experience for themselves what advantages the optional 360° camera system or the new, also optional, MirrorCam has in terms of safety.
